We've all been there. You're running around the house like a chicken with your head chopped off because you were supposed to leave for work ten minutes ago and still don't know what to wear. Or you can't find your keys. Or you're trying to scarf down some breakfast. Whatever the problem is, we all have mornings when we're running late. Then we feel frazzled before we even leave for work and have already decided the day is going to be a bad one. If you find that this is happening to you more and more often, then I have two words for you: morning routine. I firmly believe that the trick to getting out of the house on time (maybe even in under an hour!) is to have a routine that you stick to and practice daily. I'm going to share with you my morning routine that gets me out of the house in under an hour (almost) every day, then I'll share some advice to creating your own routine!
5:00 Wake Up and Check My Phone
I used to be a big fan of the snooze button, but I found that it always just made it harder to wake up. So instead of pressing snooze, I give myself about 10 minutes after my alarm goes off to check my phone and work up to getting out of bed. 5:00 is very early, so you definitely don't see me just hopping out of bed right away!
5:10 Shower and Get Dressed
I try to take as quick of a shower as possible so that I can keep my routine moving. Also, it allows me to wake up as late as possible, being that it's so early in the morning. If I took 20-30 minute showers, I would have to wake up even earlier, and I think waking up before 5:00 should be illegal!
5:25 Eat Breakfast
I used to eat breakfast at the end of my morning routine, but quite frankly, lately I have been too hungry to wait until then. So I eat breakfast once I am dressed so as to not starve before 6:00 (if you know anything about me, you know that I do not do well when I'm hungry, so this is for the best!) It also gives some time for my hair to start drying before I have to blow dry it.
5:35 Do My Hair and Makeup
I usually blow dry my hair, do my makeup, and then style my hair. I save a lot of time on mornings that I don't wash my hair because I can skip blow drying! I try to plan those mornings on days when I have a lot to do at work in the morning so that I can get there a little early.
6:10 Brush My Teeth and Make My Coffee
Multitasking for the win! As I brush my teeth, I get my coffee going. I take my coffee to go so that I can save some time in the morning. If I drank my coffee before going to work, I would be guaranteed to burn my tongue. Nobody wants to drink a cup of coffee in 10 minutes.
6:15 Leave for Work
And I'm off! I aim for leaving by 6:15, but sometimes it might be 6:05, other mornings it might be 6:20. If I don't leave for work by 6:25, then it's one of those mornings like I mentioned above, and that is not a good start to my day.
So how can you come up with a morning routine? Start by deciding how long you need. I think that an hour is a reasonable amount of time to start with. Then start prioritizing what you need to do in the morning, and what you can cut. Obviously, you need time to get dressed and ready. But do you need to shower in the morning, or would it be better to shower the night before? Can you eat breakfast at work? Can you cut the time down on your hair and makeup routine? Odds are, you only need to make a few changes to your morning to make sure you get out of the house on time.
Check back later this week to find out what I do the night before to make my morning routine run smoothly!
